Moving to the UK from Ukraine was a big move for 10-year-old Nikita who, despite facing challenges as a refugee, has remained a kind-hearted, creative and eager young boy. His mum, Olesia tells us how, “Nikita is always full of energy when it comes to things he loves – especially music.”
Nikita was enrolled on the Rocksteady bursary programme, which Olesia says has been an incredible blessing for their family. “As a single mother and refugee, I never imagined my son would have the chance to explore his passion for music in the UK,” she explains.
When Nikita started learning guitar with his band, the Music Maestros, it gave him a great sense of belonging as he was able to make friends at his new school thanks to their shared interest in music. With this, Olesia has seen Nikita’s communication strengthen, as she says, “His emotional resilience has improved, and he now handles challenges with more confidence.”
Nikita’s growing self-belief has also been noticed by his teachers, who have not only seen him smiling and opening up to classmates more, but also engaging and focusing in lessons as he now shows a genuine interest at school.
Olesia shares how, “Nikita comes home full of energy and excitement, eager to practice and share what he’s learned. The confidence, and emotional strength he’s gained from these lessons are priceless.”
She has also seen Nikita become a lot more positive through his weekly band lessons as she explains, “He used to be quite shy and reserved but is now excited to perform and share his progress. He feels proud of himself and enjoys being part of a group. His overall mood has improved, and he has found a new passion that motivates him.”
Joining Rocksteady has given Nikita a safe space to express his love for music whilst adapting to a new country. “At a time when everything around him was changing, the lessons provided him with joy and stability,” Olesia says.
Reflecting on their journey, Olesia tells us how, “after everything we've been through, music has become a source of happiness and healing for Nikita. Thank you for giving my son the chance to grow through music. We will always be grateful for this opportunity.”
